3. Aron Ralston
This man in 2003 was forced to cut off half of his right arm with a dull knife in order to get out between boulder and rock wall in Utah canyon. He was trapped for several days in the canyon when rocks shifted. There is a film made of his ordeal called 127 hours starring James Franco.
After cutting his arm and losing a lot of blood he rushed in his car and then found the Netherlands family who was doing hiking. They alerted the authorities gave him Oreos and water. Four hours later medics came to take them away. The medics said the timing was perfect. If he waited sooner to cut his arm then the family wouldn’t have found him and he would have died from losing blood. If he waited later he would have died in the canyon.
