5. Slavomir Rawicz
Polish army officers got caught by Red Army when the German Soviets were dividing Poland in 1939. He was sentenced to 25 years of hard labor in the Siberian Gulag. He and 6 other prisoners managed to escape. They walked 4000 miles across frozen Siberian tundra, the Gobi desert, through Tibet over Himalayan, and into India. There is a book written on the story called The Long Walk written in 1955.
