Colosseum
The Colosseum is an oval amphitheater located in central Rome, Italy. Since its construction in 70 AD, it is still the largest amphitrite today. It is estimated nearly 400,000 people died and nearly 1 million animals within the grounds of the Colosseum over a 400 year period. Most of the deaths were of people of lower class such as religious members, prison mates, and gladiators.
It is estimated nearly 3000 Christians have died on the battleground. St. Ignatius was the first Christian to have died in the Colosseum, who chose to die for his religion in front of the thousands of spectators.
Ignatius had himself wrote that he would be thrown to the beasts, believed to be half-starved lions, where he would ultimately die.
